My Approach

The first sentence of every novel should be: 'Trust me, this will take time but there is order here,
very faint, very human.' Meander if you want to get to town.

- Michael Ondaatje

Dr. Lou sees psychotherapy as a co-created journey of healing. Throughout her experience, she has found healing to take place within trusting and collaborative relationships.  Her practice includes working with each person to establish the trust and the framework needed for the journey.

Dr. Lou’s approach is depth-oriented psychotherapy that includes both psychological and spiritual dimensions of human experience.  It is a process which helps a person understand and resolve his/her issues by increasing awareness of his/her inner world.  It involves exploring more fully thoughts, feelings, and sensations that a person was previously unaware of, identifying recurring tendencies in a person’s life and relationships, working with inner conflicts and emotional attachments by which a person maintains his/her suffering, and integrating unconscious aspects of a person’s experience into increasing conscious awareness.

The work draws from Analytical (Jungian) psychology and Relational Psychoanalytic theories.  It may include the use of verbal and nonverbal interventions such as analysis of dreams and reveries, visual art expression, and Sandplay.  Sandplay is a cross-cultural, hands on, non-verbal method of psychotherapy that is an adjunct to talk therapy, and it provides an experiential avenue for children and adults to tap into the unconscious and facilitate psychological healing and transformation.

Psychotherapy aspires to many things, but in the end its highest achievement is the development of a new and revitalized internal world that allows the person to be more fully human and to create a more meaningful life.  The core of this approach is in the progressive healing of the deepest part of the person which is sometimes referred to as the soul.
